Improving your gut health is the number one thing you can do to help improve your fertility [in my humble opinion]. One of the easiest things you can check at home for free is your stomach acid!
When you start to improve your gut health to enhance your fertility, it can improve egg and sperm quality and promote a receptive uterine lining for implantation. YES, PLEASE! You'll also most likely see an improvement in your normal day to day health issues and more balanced hormones. 🤩
But let’s start from the beginning……..
Chewing our food sets the digestive process off, as digestion begins in the mouth! [a process called mastication] This release of enzymes [salivary amylase] starts the digestion of carbohydrates.
Food is further broken down in the stomach by HCl (PH 1.0 to 2.5) & more enzymes. This kills harmful microorganisms and helps create favourable conditions for enzymes such as pepsin, which helps break down protein.
HCl also makes nutrients such as Vitamin B12, Calcium, Zinc, Iron, and Magnesium available from our food - all essential vitamins to have plenty of when you are trying to increase your fertility and get pregnant!
A lack of stomach acid [not an excess] causes reflux as food is not being properly digested and is causing acid to flare up into the esophagus. the amount of acid produced is also affected by the amount and type of food you are eating and how you feel!
[If the stomach is too alkaline, the digestive tract system does not work well, and you end up with complications further along the track, such as SIBO.]
So let's think about this for a second......
If you are stressed and eating on the go, your body is likely to be producing less HCl, and your digestion just isn’t going to be great, whatever you are eating.
TOP TIP: Stop eating breakfast in the car. Before you eat take three, deep mindful breaths whenever and eat away from electronic devices or your office desk.
You'll also want to limit your top inflammatory foods. If you need support and guidance on finding your perfect fertility diet, check out The Fertility Food Program.
Here's how you to Test for Stomach Acid Levels at Home
Some simple signs of low stomach acid include noticing undigested food in your stool or feeling overly full after eating a protein-rich meal (like it sits in your stomach), but if you want to test, use bicarbonate of soda and water to give you an indicator of your HCl levels (remember this is just a guide!)
If you are taking NSAIDs, Corticosteroids or have other concerns, please speak to your GP first.
First thing in the morning drink (in one go) a mixture of 1/4 tsp of bicarbonate of soda mixed in 150ml of room temperature water
Set a timer and measure how long before you belch
Repeat for several mornings to check the results
Ignoring tiny little burps, the test tends to show the earlier you burp, the more stomach acid you have
0-2 Minutes: You have plenty (& possibly, though rarely, too much) HCl
2-3 Minutes: You have about the right amount of HCl
4 Minutes upwards: This may suggest you have low HCl
If you need support:
If you suspect you have low HCl, you can encourage its production by mixing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or some lemon in about 200mls of water before you eat.
Whether or not you need medical assistance, improving your gut health to increase your fertility is a must [in my humble opinion]. The benefits to you and your baby to be too amazing to count!!
🌺 Digestive Enzymes can help you digest your food comfortably. So your body can absorb even more of the nutrients on your plate — without cramping, bloating, gas or constipation.*
If you're new to a real food diet rich in healthy fats (hello, fat bombs!), enzyme can help digest fat [thanks, lipase!] Enzymes can help digest complex carbs in gassy foods like beans, cabbage and broccoli, and starchy foods like oats and rice. With DPP-IV enzymes, this helps to support the breakdown of casein and gluten.
🦩Who should take it: If you want to support gut function, improve digestion & absorb more nutrients.
🦩When you should take it: At the end of every meal. It's critically important to start slowly, with a lower dosage than recommended. For example, a minimal dose every other day, or even once a week, until you can determine how the supplement affects your body and what dosage feels right for you. Sart by taking one capsule daily with food. Work your way up to the required amount [STOP at seven]. Use for 3 months and then re-evaluate.
🦩Top Tips: HCl + Enzymes contains HCl and pepsin. It's perfect for people following the GAPS Diet, restricting their grains and carbohydrate intake, and looking to restore their HCl levels and maximize their absorption of fats, proteins, minerals, and other nutrients.
🦩Who shouldn't take it: If you think you might have H. pylori do not take HCl + Enzymes, use basic Digestive Enzymes.
