Can Your Gut Health Have an Effect on Your Fertility?

It's time to start up the baby-making factory.

You're excited! 9 months from now, you are going to have a baby.

So you track your cycle. Again & again & again. 9 months turns into 3 years & still no baby.

When that doesn't work, you go to the doctors for support. They track your cycles, maybe check out how your thyroid is behaving & have a good old root around your lady bits.

Then you get diagnosed with something. If they can't find anything, you're labelled unexplained. And then it's highly likely you get sent to do an IUI or IVF. Because as of right now, that's most doctors answer to infertility.

It doesn't work & you're left wondering WTF.

For everyone. There is a root cause of your infertility. For most people, the answer lies in your gut. 

Let me say that again: Your infertility issues highly likely stem from your gut. 

Say what? Babies aren’t made in the gut. I hear you say.

I know!!! But remember we talked about your body as a whole - it’s all linked together. Right!?! Your gut health can have a negative effect on your fertility.

So if one thing is out of sync, it’s highly likely that other things are going to start having issues too.

Think about it this way: Your guts have to deal with everything you put in your mouth. So if you’re putting things into your guts that it doesn’t like, sh*t can go down!! And I just don’t mean pooping. 💩 

The evidence is coming out slowly on how much the gut has an impact all over the body - There’s emerging research indicating that the gut microbiome plays a central role in the regulation of estrogen levels within the body and thus influences the risk of developing estrogen-related diseases such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. A lot of unexplained causes & reoccurring miscarriages can be linked to the term leaky gut. If you haven't, here is a beginners guide to what might be going on in your gut & contributing to your infertility:

🦩The photo above is a healthy gut. The gut barrier is a semi-permeable barrier & it’s supposed to let nutrients into the body while keeping everything else out.

🦩When we eat & drink foods that we are intolerant to, over time, intestinal permeability happens. This is leaky gut (photo below). Your gut barrier integrity losses off & is now allowing substances can cross (or “leak”) into the body that normally wouldn’t (or in higher quantities than normal)

🦩Immediately inside the gut barrier is 80% of our immune systems, so when substances like bacterial proteins, partially digested food particles, and toxins cross into the body, the immune system is activated

🦩The immune activation that results from leaky gut can cause body-wide inflammation & is associated with all chronic illnesses, including unexplained infertility, thyroid issues, reoccurring miscarriages & other autoimmune issues

🦩The variety of symptoms & diagnoses pointing to a leaky gut is huge & getting down to what is causing a leaky gut

You are already steps closer to healing your gut by being on day eight of eliminating your top two stressors. For some, that (plus a little stress refile) will be enough. Others will have to dig deeper. This all depends on how deep your issue is & your genetics.

I know it's hard to take this all in - it's a lot. We can't see it, so it's hard to relate to. But you can feel it! Keep going, stay strong & most likely, you'll start seeing little improvements that will build up to big results.
